The MediaWatch Project
is a network of volunteers who monitor TV, movies, magazines,
newspapers, websites, and other media and record positive and
negative portrayals of large-size people.
To be a MediaWatch volunteer, please read through the media portion
of this website. When you notice something in the media that pleases
or offends you concerning body size and weight, fill out a
MediaWatch Comment Form and send it to us.
If you are interested in further activism, you can write a letter to
the company responsible for the positive or negative portrayal. This
packet includes guidelines for writing letters of praise or
criticism, and lists of addresses for television networks. For
additional addresses, including advertisers, you can call or visit
your local library and ask the reference librarians for help.
We keep active files on companies and organizations, and track
instances of positive or negative portrayals of larger people. The
power of our comments to the networks and other media depends
directly on the personal comment forms sent in by our MediaWatch
volunteers. Together, we can have an important influence on the
media's attitudesand thereby on society's attitudestowards people
of size.
Thank you for your help.
